8 Breathtaking Places who are worth a visit in Greece!

Oh, Greece! There aren’t many places left in the world that are so breathtakingly beautiful and raw as Greece. The best way to see all this beauty is to grab a car and drive around with no final destination. Just go with the flow! I spend a month road-tripping from Lefkada to Athens and these are the 8 places that are worth a visit.

Lefkada

Lefkada is one of the most breathtaking Greek islands and it is located in the heart of the Ionian sea, connected with the mainland by a small bridge. This place boasts one of the most wonderful natural landscapes and some of the most scenic beaches if you ask me from Europe and a worthy opponent of the Caribbean. It’s an absolute dream destination for those who are into exotic islands. I went parasailing, beaches, sunsets, and chill.

Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge is a 2 hours drive from Preveza up in the northwest of Greece. The landscape is completely different than elsewhere through the country. Nevertheless, a perfect place for a good hike and breathtaking views of this unique natural phenomenon. Vikos Gorge is the second deepest Gorge in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the USA.

Parga

Driving from Preveza to Patra directly is a hard one. Greece has many small villages, each of which has something unique to offer. It is therefore advisable to just get out somewhere and look around. I end up in Parga. This little town has a beautiful setting! Let me set the scene: Colorful houses built on the slopes of a mountain, exotic beaches with turquoise waters and natural surroundings, the people are laidback and the vibe is great. What’s not to love about Parga. (sidenote) just a perfect stop for a day.

Patras

Patras is Greece’s third-largest city and the regional capital of western Greece, in the northern Peloponnese. More about Peloponnese in the upcoming blog. Patras is a commercial hub and located on the foot of a mountain, they called it sometimes the gate with western Europe. This city hosts two universities and has a lot of students. It has lively nightlife but this place is also known for its important scientific center. It’s exactly halfway on my road to Athens and a perfect place to stay over for the night.

Delphi

For some nostalgia and history, you should not skip the city of Delphi. At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the center of the world. I’ll spare you the whole story, but quite a few myths are circulating about Delphi.

Glyfada

Athens is on the rise as a city break destination, and while the trend is mainly driven by attractions of the city center, some suburbs should be on every traveler’s radar. If you are ready to mingle then Glyfada is the place to be. It’s located right on the seafront, and only 30 minutes drive from Athens city center, airport, and Ferries to different islands. It has lovely beaches, big restaurants, and a lot of high-end stores. It’s a perfect mix between the best of city-living with all that the coast has to offer. It has been my favorite base to explore the rest of Greece.

Hydra

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. Just in 2 hours, you arrived with the ferry from Athens to Hydra. It’s a perfect place for a short trip or in my case a day trip. On the island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their feet, boats, or donkeys to get around the island. Its car ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, creates a charming atmosphere. The people are extremely friendly and for me one of the most serene destinations near Athens.

Athens

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece and also one of the world’s oldest cities. I can now list all kinds of touristic things, but you can find them yourself. What I would recommend is to walk around, Go climb one of the tallest hills of the city, Lycabettus it has a great view of the entire Attica Basin. Get lost in the streets of Athens. Take a look at a Bookshop, or grab a coffee. This city also provides good restaurants or a simple cafe for a quick bite. If you are in a good mood for some nightlife activities, Athens is the place to be.
