They say Isla de la Plata is the perfect alternative to the Galapagos Islands. If you’re short on time or budget, this island comes highly recommended. Intrigued by the wild stories about the Galapagos, I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about.
Setting Out on an Adventure
One day, I decided to embark on this adventure and signed up for a tour organized by Santo Palo. I chose to go during the rainy season, which brought a different experience – it was chilly, mostly gray, and had a unique charm. From Puerto Lopez, a boat takes you at full speed across the ocean. This part of the journey is not for the faint-hearted; it can get quite wild. Pro tip: sit at the back of the boat to minimize the impact of the waves, focus on a fixed point, avoid eating too much junk food, and just chill.

Arriving at Isla de la Plata
After three hours, the boat reaches an island that is off-limits to cars but open to humans. There are paths to explore, but it’s primarily a bird paradise. Upon arrival, you can use the restroom facilities, but there are no restaurants or shops, so it’s wise to bring your own supplies. The island is a protected area, and if you wish to fly a drone, you’ll need to apply for a permit from the ministry. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a permit, so no drone footage for me.

Exploring the Island
There are several hiking options available – a short hike and a longer one for the true enthusiasts. Along the way, you’ll encounter numerous blue-footed boobies, which are unique to Ecuador but can also be found in other parts of the world. Their blue feet are a result of their diet, which includes fish with certain pigments.
The area is stunning. I can’t say for sure if it’s a worthy alternative to the Galapagos Islands, but if you want to see these birds, it’s definitely worth a visit. After a few hours, we were picked up by the boat again. The return trip was stormy, and I was relieved to reach the harbor safely.

An Unforgettable Experience
Another exciting aspect of the journey is the chance to spot whales while you’re at sea. This experience is unforgettable. Let’s be honest, how often do you hear someone say they’ve sailed alongside a whale?

Final Thoughts
Isla de la Plata offers a unique adventure for those seeking to explore Ecuador’s natural beauty without the expense and time commitment of visiting the Galapagos Islands. From the thrilling boat ride to the breathtaking hikes and bird sightings, every moment on this island is a treasure. The chance to spot whales is the cherry on top, making this trip an unforgettable experience.
Have you ever visited Isla de la Plata or the Galapagos Islands? What was your experience like? If you haven’t, would you consider visiting this hidden gem? I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories.
