Are You Running Towards Something or Away from Everything?

Have you ever been asked if you’re working towards something or running away from everything? It’s a question that’s been posed to me countless times, often with a predetermined assumption that I must be fleeing from something. But what if the answer isn’t so black and white? What if it’s not about running away but rather about carving out a path that’s uniquely your own?

Let’s break it down. We all have goals, aspirations, and dreams we’re working towards, whether we’re fully aware of them or not. But what about running away? For me, it’s a label I’ve been assigned more times than I can count. Yet, I see it differently. To me, it’s not about blindly conforming to societal expectations or chasing after someone else’s definition of success.

I’ve often been told that success looks like climbing the social ladder, building a career, starting a family – all within a predetermined framework. But who dictates that this is how life should be lived? Who says it’s not about continually reinventing yourself or starting anew? Who defines settling down versus constantly evolving? Who sets the standards?

I find myself questioning what it truly means to run away. Is it about giving up and conforming to societal norms? Or is it about choosing a different path, one that aligns more closely with your values and desires? Recently, I had a conversation with someone who saw themselves in my journey. They admitted to once feeling like they were running away until they found a path that brought them peace and purpose.

While I understand their perspective, I can’t say I feel the same. Currently, I have a multitude of destinations on my horizon, too many interests to pursue, and a desire to explore it all. So why should I feel pressured to have a concrete plan or strive towards something that may not even resonate with me? What’s wrong with wandering aimlessly, allowing life to unfold organically?

The term “running away” carries a negative connotation, but perhaps it’s more about dancing around the edges, exploring the unknown, and embracing the uncertainty. Do you relate to this? If so, how has it shaped your journey? Share your stories in the comments below.

Life is a journey, not a destination. And sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made when we dare to stray from the beaten path and forge our own way forward. So, whether you’re running towards something or away from everything, remember that every step you take is part of your unique story. Embrace it.
